Kaas Plateau

Kaas Plateau is a volcanic plateau located 25 Km away from Satara District Head Quarter & 20 Km away from Northern part of Koyana Sanctuary. It is spread in around 1000 hectare of land also known as  ‘Kaas Pathar’ or ‘Plateau of Flowers‘. Kaas plateau has been given the status of UNSECO Natural World Heritage Site in 2012. The major portion of the plateau is Reserve Forest and is listed under the Protection Working Circle. Kaas lake built 100 years ago is a perennial source of water supply for western part of Satara city by gravity.
Kaas is a biodiversity hotspot for various types of seasonal wild flowers and various butterflies species that visit annually. This place displays a spectacular natural event wherein the entire grassland is covered with tiny wild flowers spreading across the horizon during monsoon season particularly from August to early October. The plateau is given a metaphor as “Switzerland of India” because of the endless varieties of endemic flowering plants, small shrubs and trees located at the periphery of the plateau. It is not only a botanist’s paradise but also a photographic heaven.
